Pride in Place: What Independent Retailers Need to Know

High streets are back in the spotlight. Today, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Pride in Place, a landmark initiative designed to hand real power back to local communities. From giving residents the ability to reclaim boarded-up shops to blocking a flood of betting and vape outlets, this programme aims to breathe life into town centres and, crucially, create new opportunities for independent retailers.

Why this matters for indies

We all know the story: empty units, shuttered pubs, high streets that don’t quite reflect the communities they serve. For independents, that means fewer customers walking through the door and tougher trading conditions. Pride in Place changes the script by putting communities and their businesses at the centre of regeneration.

Here’s what’s on the table:

  • Unlocking new retail space
Communities will have the power to take over long-vacant or derelict premises, opening the door for local start-ups and independents to claim affordable, central locations.

  • Protecting community assets
Treasured pubs, libraries, and other much-loved spots could be safeguarded through community ownership, helping to create destinations that attract footfall and spending.

  • Balancing the high street mix
Councils will be able to block the over-saturation of betting shops, vape stores, and “fake barbers”, giving independents more room to stand out.

  • Funding with local priorities in mind
Investment will only flow where communities are actively involved in decision-making, meaning money is spent on what really matters to local businesses and residents.

The bigger picture

Strong, thriving high streets don’t just happen; they’re built on collaboration, creativity, and investment. For independents, this initiative signals a commitment to creating the kind of retail environments where unique, community-rooted shops can flourish. And it ties neatly into consumer demand for experiences that feel local, authentic, and personal.

How retailers can get involved

If you’re an independent retailer, this is the moment to step forward:

  • Join your local Pride in Place Board to influence decisions.

  • Partner with community groups to co-create events, markets, and spaces that pull people back into town centres.

  • Keep a close eye on newly acquired premises, as there may be opportunities to move in or expand.

Looking ahead

With more than 330 communities supported at launch and funding extending across the UK, Pride in Place is poised to transform the evolution of high streets. For independents, it could mean more accessible spaces, stronger community backing, and, above all, a renewed sense of pride in place.

The message is clear: stay informed, get involved, and help shape the future of your high street.
